Caring for Your Containers

Fall Window BoxWatering: Proper watering is vital to success! Most annuals need water every day that is sunny and dry. If it is exceedingly hot they may need to be watered twice.  Reduce watering when the weather is overcast or rainy.  Check the surface of the soil first to see if it is dry to the touch. It is important to water the soil and not the foliage to prevent diseases. Allow shade containers to dry slightly between waterings. Plants prefer to be watered in the morning rather than in the heat of the day or in the evening.

Wall BasketFertilizing: Your plants will thrive when you use a liquid fertilizer every two weeks or a granular time-released fertilizer. Consistent applications will give plants a steady supply of nutrients for lush foliage and flowering. Too much fertilizer will result in no flowers—be careful not to overfeed!

Cleaning: Your containers will look their best if you take a little time each week to “clean” or “deadhead” the flowers as they begin to fade.  This results in bushier plants and prevents diseases.  It is also a good idea to remove any yellowing or sparse foliage. Some annuals such as petunias benefit from a “cutting back” half way through the growing season.  A few flowers are sacrificed but the result is lush, full plants into the fall.

Please be sure to ask for specific care instructions if you are not clear on how to care for your containers.
